Chief (Dr.) Sonny Iwedike Idogwu was born on March 20, 1931 in Calabar, Cross River State. He attended St. Peters School, Broad Street, Lagos (1939); C.MS Grammar School, Lagos (1940-43); Ilesa Grammar School (1943-46); London Insurance Institute (1954); and City College, London (1955).
Starting as a trainee pilot with Nigeria Airways in 1947 - 8, Chief Odogwu's career changed direction when he joined Norwich Union in Lagos as a trainee insurance inspector and manager (1948 - 52). During the following year he established Dyson & Diket (insurance brokers) before moving to London where he was an insurance inspector with Pearl Assurance and manager for CT Bowring (Insurance). He had a four year stint (1954 - 8) as manager with Swiss General Insurance Co in Zurich, before returning to Nigeria as assistance director for Bowring. He became proprietor and managing director of African Underwriters Ltd, Managing director (1966) and chairman (1976) for The African prudential Insurance Co Ltd, director for the Robert Bradford group of companies and (Lloyds) - and Chairman of Odogwu Group of Companies and of SID Properties from 1976, Director of Sanyo (Nigeria) and National Fertiliser Co of Nigeria Ltd (1984 - 5) and founded the Argro - Allied Sack Factory, Asaba ( 1988).
Odogwu is also an associate of Chartered Insurance Institute, London, was elected an underwriting member at Lloyds and a fellow of the Corporation of Insurance Brokers, Nigeria. Added to all he became traditional Chief of the Ide Ahaba of Asaba. Educated at Ilesha Grammar School and later Lagos grammar School, he married Theresa A Ibik in 1962 and they have nine children.
