Barely 31, and with a doctorate degree in Hydrodynamics in his kitty, Adeboye was poised to storm the academic world with his intellectual prowess when like the legendary Saul of Tarsus, he met the Lord. That was in 1973. The university don walked into a church named the Redeemed Christian Church of God, at Ebute Metta. As providence would have it, that encounter marked the turning point in his life. He was at the time a mathematics lecturer at the University of Lagos. Adeboye had a humble background. So much so that he could not own a pair of shoes until he was 18. After the first school leaving certificate at Ifewara, Osun State, his hometown, he proceeded to Ilesha Grammar School, where he passed his secondary school certificate in 1960. By dint of hard work he obtained his first degree in Mathematics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka at age 25. His doctorate degree could however not give him the peace of mind he so much desired.
On July 29, 1973, he answered the altar call and with a strong zeal for the Lord, he has never looked back. First he became the English Language interpreter of the then general superintendent. On September 14, 1975 he was ordained a pastor of the church. When the founder of the RCCG, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi died in 1980, the mantle of leadership fell on Adeboye. From 39 parishes, which he inherited in 1981, the church now has more than 5000 parishes in more than 70 countries of the world. Through him, the Lord has brought several innovations and programmes by which the church has continued to grow and expand.
Pastor Adeboye's succession as General Overseer in 1981 led to increased awareness about the doctrines of the Church and an explosion in membership and attendance. With his introduction of the Model Parishes, Christ the Redeemer's Ministries (CRM) The Holy Ghost Services and lately the Holy Ghost Festivals (since 1998) the Church has continued a determined and purposeful march into God's Kingdom taking with it millions of souls of tribes and nations on every continent.
